Kaoru Saito

5294

The exquisite print 'Tokonatsu' (Everlasting Summer) from 'The Tale of Genji' is by Kaoru Saito. "Tokonatsu" is one of the chapter titles of "The Tale of Genji," a classic Japanese novel consisting of fifty-four chapters. The chapter title is inspired by a waka poem in which Genji composed verses about the everlasting summer flowers (Nadeshiko). Genji compares the delicate and beautiful Tamakazura to the Nadeshiko flower. The pattern on the cloth she is sleeping on is also adorned with a Nadeshiko flower motif, adding to her allure. The contrast is striking, making it a truly elegant print.
