Jakuchu Ito

5281

The gorgeous flower print 'Benigiku' (Red Chrysanthemum) is by Jakuchu Ito (1716–1800), published by Unsodo. It features the Japanese title on the bottom, the Unsodo publisher's seal, and the artist's name on the lower left. This is a later impression from the original blocks (Meiji era). A very lovely flower print with wonderful colors

Jakuchu Ito (1716–1800) was a well-known Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period. He studied Kano style painting in Kyoto, where he was born as the son of a wealthy merchant. Jakuchu became a renowned artist, excelling in both painting and printmaking, particularly known for his depictions of exotic birds, flowers, and Buddhist subjects. His realistic painting style served as a source of inspiration for late 19th and early 20th-century kacho-e prints and paintings.
