Suidobashi Bridge and Surugadai (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo)

Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858)

2533

This beautiful print is published by Mokuhan print association which famous publishers join. It took six years to complete this series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo".  Size is the same as the original. The carver used traditional cherrywood (mostly plywood nowadays). The printer used traditional Echizen pure Japanese washi paper.  They used traditional carving tools, printing tools, and ink which is also used on the original. The carving and the printing is faithful to the original. Just stunning and beautiful. Please see the details.

Carp streamer and Shoki Devil-Queller flags are fluttering in a fine May sky. A man is carrying the ornament of samurai in his hand. Toy warriors and, as well as carp streamers, are the necessary accessories of the Boy's festival scene. The bridge spanner the Kanda River. Suido bashi(bridge) derived its name from the fact that a drinking water pipe crossed under the bridge to feed the city. Surugadai was the highest hill in Edo and therefore afforded the best view of Mt. Fuji in Edo.
