Early 20th-century Japan, during the Taishō and Shōwa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods (17th–19th century). It maintained the traditional ukiyo-e collaborative system (hanmoto system) where the artist, carver, printer, and publisher engaged in division of labor.

Very fine woodblock print by Mamoru Hiyoshi. From "Korean Customs and people" series. Outstanding colors. Publisher is Kyoto Hanga-in. Carver name Kikuta, Printer name is Nagae and Publisher seal on the lower right margin. This print shows a scene of straw sandal maker's life. Father is making a straw sandal, the mother is sewing by the Irori (a type of traditional sunken hearth common in Japan), children are playing "Mari asobi" (very traditional girl's playing in Japan) near the parents. Outside Shoji door is hanging persimmons. This is a very common daily life in Japan. However, this subject is Japanese life by Japanese in Korea at that time.
Hiyoshi lived in Korea before World War II. He was a painter and active in mainly Korean painting circle. Therefore a lot of his subjects are based on Korea.
In addition, many Japanese lived in Korea in those days. He produced many prints about Japanese life, manners, and customs in Korea as well as Korean manners and customs.

Very scarce woodblock print “Ai to Shiro” (Blue and White) by Elizabeth Keith was published by Shozaburo Watanabe. This print is my favorite print which is very sophisticated and elegant. You see Hokusai's "Great wave" print on the wall and beautiful blue and white plates on the shelf in the store's showcase in Kyoto. Kimono lady has a blue and white umbrella and fan. Obi sash is beautifully embossed. The beautiful black hair adds a very nice contrast with the overall blue color scheme. This print has the most Japanese mood by blue and white colors. This print is at several museums in Japan. Printed on handmade mulberry paper with full margins. Once tipped on the bottom of verso. Very strong impression with fine colors. A prime example of Elizabeth Keith's work.

This is an amazing woodblock print "Akashicho" (Garden corner) is by Tatsumi Shimura (1907-1980). Tatsumi said about this print, "I feel Akashicho (a very old section of Tokyo) of admiration and admired the depth of the image taste since the founder of a religious sect Kiyokata* died. They were many kept girls by a man in Tsukiji of the Meiji era. The woman who appeared to see off the man who returned early in the morning of early fall. The empty sadness that does not know when he next comes. She put a kimono ( called Awase) on chest (heart) on the bare skin unintentionally in unlined clothes, the morning when it is cold. Few flowers of the reluctance of leaving look like just a woman standing still."
Carver; Kentaro Maeda, Printer; Ritsuzo Sato, and Publisher; Yuyudo. Carver name and printer name on the lower right margin and publisher seal on the lower left margin. Red "Tatsumi Kenin" seal in the lower right margin reads, "Tatsumi seal of approval". Colors are vivid and vibrant and in layers. Lightly embossed.
