The beautiful woodblock print 'Ume' (Plum Tree) is by Chizuko Yoshida (1924–2017). This large print depicts a small nightingale on a branch of a fully blossomed plum tree. The exquisite combination of intricate flowers and gentle gradation is remarkable. The Japanese title, artist's signature, and artist's red seal are in the lower right corner of the image. It is signed by the artist in pencil on the bottom margin.
Chizuko Yoshida was born in 1924 in Kanagawa Prefecture. Her husband was Hodaka Yoshida, the second son of Hiroshi Yoshida. After studying woodblock printing under Hodaka and Fumio Kitaoka, she created beautiful works featuring stars, butterflies, and flowers using a technique that involves not only woodblock printing but also the combination of woodblock and zinc plate printing. She is a popular female artist.

Gotemba is a city on the southeastern flank of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture. Gotemba was the location of the earliest known settlement founded in the region of Shizuoka, which dates back 2,000 years.
曼珠沙華 (Spider Lily)
The Japanese common name Higanbana (彼岸花, Higan bana) for Spider Lily literally means “flower of higan (the other shore of Sanzu River, or a Buddhist holiday around the autumnal equinox).”. In Japan, the red spider lily signals the arrival of fall. Another popular Japanese name is Manjushage (曼珠沙華, Manjusha-ge), taken from the name of a mythical flower described in the Chinese translation of the Lotus Sutra. It is called by over 1,000 other local names in Japan.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Ohtsu about this print, and he shared with me that it holds a special place in his heart as a memory of a place he visited with his master, Kiyoshi Saito. They visited Aizu together many times over the years, and this print represents their first visit together as master and disciple that left a lasting impression on Ohtsu.
The snow-covered village and its people are depicted with mastery and skill, showcasing the beauty and warmth of Aizu. Kiyoshi Saito remains in Ohtsu's heart, and this print is a tribute to their wonderful memories together, hence the title 'Omoide' (Memory).
